Icebug is now a Certified B Corporation!

The B in B Corp stands for “Benefit,” and the movement consists of companies using business as a force for good.

For several years, we have been working hard to change the shoe industry and to inspire people to enjoy more sustainable lifestyles. We work hard to minimize our climate impact and each year we take part in climate activism and support good causes. To become a B Corp means meeting some of the toughest sustainability criteria there is – but more importantly it means that we will now manage to do even more – as part of a global movement with brands such as Patagonia, Klean Kanteen, Allbirds, Ben & Jerries and many more!

What can “go beyond” mean? Here is a message from Icebug’s CEO, David Ekelund:

“When I founded Icebug together with my mother back in 2001, the simple mission was to make footwear that keep people from slipping. And to make money. I certainly didn’t have any desire to become an environmental activist, but over the years it has become impossible to ignore the state of the World and the direction we’re heading.

I – we – can’t continue to keep one set of values for what we think is right for the World, and then switch to another set of values when we’re at work and the system asks us to do what’s needed to maximize sales and profit.

What really needs to be done now, is to use our business as a force for good. At Icebug, we still make footwear to keep people from slipping. But now, making sure that we’re not doing it at the expense of others or nature.

We’ve decided to have no growth target and to always prioritize people and planet over profit. This, in turn, means saying no to inbound airfreight, no to hunting the cheapest production place – and other things that would benefit us financially but hurt nature and society.

Taking a bigger responsibility means more and more difficult work. The team at Icebug has willingly shouldered this to end business as usual.

The shoe industry is dirty, but by showing that you can make footwear in a fair and responsible way, we hope to disrupt the bad parts and create a bigger change. Thankfully, we’re not the only ones thinking and acting this way. In 2022, we became part of the B Corp movement which means joining other companies around the world using their business as a force for good.”
